Our Story

Above & Beyond Swim School was founded in 2016 by husband and wife team – Shad & Toni Royston, but it has taken a number of years to get to where they are today.

When Shad’s 10 year career as a professional rugby league player in Australia and the UK came to a grinding halt through injury, he turned back to the pool and an industry that he first became involved with almost 15 years before. Bringing his experience in professional sport and junior development, with him to the swim industry.

With Toni’s knowledge and experience as a primary school teacher who specialised in early childhood development, and with some mentorships from some of the swim industries leading experts, they have always believed that by putting their knowledge, passion and skills together, it would create the perfect environment for children to learn to swim.

Now together with their three young children, and a team of passionate and qualified staff, they are providing the Gladstone region with industry-leading aquatic education.

Why Swim with Above & Beyond

Above & Beyond isn’t just our name it’s an ethos we live by!

At Above and Beyond Swim School we believe that aquatic education is more than just learning to swim. We have designed our program around child development principles, the rights of children in an aquatic environment, and uniquely small class sizes. We are the premier Gladstone Swim School and the only Healthyswim accredited swim school in Central Queensland.

Your child is at the centre of what we do!

Our qualified instructors are passionate about building trust and using teaching methods that create positive learning experiences. Nurturing children to help them overcome their fears and reinforcing skills with fun based activities. This approach not only teaches children essential water safety skills, but also a love and affinity with the water that helps us to further develop correct technique. It’s our belief that these positive experiences accelerate the learning process, and we have seen it deliver consistent results.

Success to us, is doing ordinary things, extraordinarily well!

Customer satisfaction and building a sense of community are as important to us as the quality of our lessons. Our purpose built indoor facilities have been specifically designed for learn to swim tuition and they include an indoor pool that is heated to 33°C year round. This not only provides the perfect environment for aquatic education, but a comfortable place for parents to relax or engage in. Uniquely small class sizes and a flexible make up policy ensures that parents receive value for money.

This, together with staff that genuinely care about providing positive experiences for you and your children, has meant that we have been lucky enough to win multiple awards for doing what we do.

Heathy Swim Accreditation

The health and safety of your children is as important to us as it is to you, it is the reason why we’re in business. We believe everyone should have the right to swim in pool water that is safe and clean. That’s why we were the first and only swim school in Central Queensland to archive HealthySwim Certification.

Unfortunately, many aquatic facilities around the country operate with chemical levels outside the legal limits set by the Australian Health Department. Healthyswim accredited swimming pools operate with water quality twice as healthy as government legal requirements. They must have invested in and utilise secondary UV and Ozone sanitisation systems to clean and purify their pool water.

These systems are state of the art technology that eliminates 99.9% of bacteria and viruses, 3500 times faster than chlorine alone and they ensure our customers experience the healthiest water possible in a wonderfully odour-free environment. These systems also destroy chlorine by-products (chloramines) that are known to cause eye, skin or respiratory irritations. This is especially helpful for swimmers with eczema, asthma or allergies.

This technology gives us peace of mind knowing that our customers are safe in these challenging times. For those that are interested, there is a link below that gives a more detailed explanation of our Healthyswim Certification.
